Protect Yourself From Internet Scams

PROTECT YOURSELF

Buy and sell in your local area to help avoid fraud. ALWAYS MAKE YOUR TRANSACTION IN PERSON. Look very closely at any transaction dealing with Western Union, MoneyGram, bank transfer, cashiers check, order, shipping, escrow from a non-reputable company or any promise of transaction protection, guarantee or certification. These are typical angles scammers use to take your .

Take a good hard look and use good judgement.

1) If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

2) If you absolutely must have something shipped, use a reputable escrow company such as Escrow.com. If the seller accepts credit cards, use one. Never use cash or cash equivalents with any online transactions.

3) Be very careful when a seller is from overseas. Many internet scams come from overseas. Be very careful when a seller states that they are on a “trip” overseas and must conduct business from there.

4) Obtain legitimate contact information. Get phone numbers. Get addresses. Ask for references with phone numbers. Legitimate buyers and sellers will offer these things.

5) Ask for a of the seller holding the item. Ask for a of the seller holding a piece of paper with your name written on it.

6) Remember, there is no rush. Take precautions and pay with a method that offers protection.

Here is the most common scam we see:

The scammer offers to pay by check (cashier’s check/ order) for more then the item is worth, then they will ask you to send them back the difference in (usually Western Union). A couple weeks later you find out the check was fake and the bank will take it out of your account. This scam can be set up several ways. Some scammers have even gone as far as setting up their own websites.

Some key points for pointing out a scammer:

1. They don’t care much about the item, just the transaction.

2. They say they will use their own shipper.

3. 95% of the scammers are from overseas

4. They pay you more then the item is worth and then ask you for the difference in funds sent back to them.

Please take some time to familiarize yourself with some of the common scams on the internet today.
